PSG is a French football club, formed in 1970 when two Parisian teams, Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain merged to form a single club, which was named Paris Sant Germain FC. Initially they played their home games at the Stade Velodrome but in 1973 they moved to Parc des Princes, their famous home ground of the modern era.

PSG is France’s richest club, owned by Qatari Sports Investments who have plowed loads of money into the club to build it into one of the most successful football clubs in the world, setting a record in 2017 for transfer fees, when they signed Brazilian theatrical superstar Neymar from Barcelona for around £200million.

In 2021 they signed the world’s most famous football player, Lionel Messi from Barcelona on a two year deal. Considered one of the greatest players of all time, Messi had scored a 672 goals in 778 games for Barcelona, who he joined as a 13-year-old and didn’t want to leave. C’est La Vie.

Top flight competitiors

PSG compete in League 1, which is France’s top football league. The country’s most decorated football team, they have won over 40 honours and 9 league titles, plus one major European trophy. During their heyday in the 80s they were winning everything but fell to decline as so often happens with poor leadership/lack of investment and it wasn’t until 2011 that their fortunes were revived when the QSI bought in and invested heavily in improving the club.

They are now the dominant force in French football and aim to consolidate that power as much as they can in order to continue their good fortune with a willing and ambitious leadership team. They also have a pre-eminent ladies football team.

So far the one trophy that has eluded them is the Champion’s League and this is what they have their sights set on now, whilst maintaining their top performance in the domestic league.
